It was nice to meet some of you at our events over the past few months including Justice Moen’s talk about Reforming the Family Justice System, Justice Côté’s talk about Practical Legal Research, and more recently, our Christmas Mixer at the Rose & Crown Pub, all with fantastic turnouts!
However, there are still a few of you who I haven’t spoken with very much yet (or at all), so here is a little bit about me:
My interest in law librarianship began when I worked as a part-time library assistant for the Alberta Law Libraries – Edmonton reference branch. I had a very positive experience, and to this day, it remains one of my favourite places to work. I have lived nearly my entire life in Edmonton, and only left the city for a year, when I was completing my MLIS at Western University in London, Ontario. I am currently working part-time as the solo librarian of Emery Jamieson LLP, and have learned a lot (to say the least!) over the past 9 months, which I have to credit to you – the incredible network of knowledgeable and experienced law librarians and legal information professionals I have toured the libraries of and reached out to with obscure questions. I know that it is largely because of ELLA that I have been able to progress so much within the first year of my career in the LIS field, and for that I am truly grateful. On that note, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be the Chair of your society at such an early stage of my career! I look forward to keep learning and growing from seeing and hearing about what all of you do, and how you do it all!
Jane, Ana, and myself are working to continue the trend of arranging more amazing speakers for 2016. We are starting the year off with a bang with 2 events in January, and we hope to see you there!

With the resignation of Gina Linden, the Secretary-Treasurer position on the ELLA Executive was vacant. Nominations were solicited and I am very pleased to report that Christine Watson allowed her name to stand for the position and was acclaimed as our newest ELLA Executive Member. This meeting will be a presentation about Alberta’s Open Government initiative with Mark Diner, Chief Advisor, Open Government and Transparency, Service Alberta.
Candidates for Secretry-Treasurer will also be introduced. Nominations for this position are welcome up to 4 pm on October 23, 2013.

A reminder that association memberships are due. Be sure to renew your membership with the association’s brand new online membership form! Bring a cash or cheque payment (made out to Edmonton Law Libraries Association) to the business meeting or mail your cheque payments to the ELLA P.O. Box (please see the Membership Form page for mailing address).
The ELLA Bylaws allow for the resignation of an officer and state that an election for the position shall be held. As Gina Linden is moving on, this post, which will also be circulated by email, is a call for nominations for the position of Secretary-Treasurer.
The Secretary-Treasurer shall attend all meetings of the Association and keep accurate minutes of the same. In case of the absence of the Secretary, his / her duties shall be discharged by such officer as may be appointed by the Executive. He / she shall keep an accurate and complete record of all members in good standing of the Association, send notice of meetings as required and collect the annual dues and other financial assessments on behalf of the Association. The Secretary-Treasurer shall have custody of Association monies, shall keep full and accurate accounts of receipts and disbursements in books belonging to the Association, and shall deposit all monies and other valuable effect in the name and to the credit of the Association and in such depositories as may be designated by the Executive from time to time. He / she shall disburse funds of the Association as may be ordered by the Executive, taking proper vouchers for such disbursements and shall render to the members of the Association at regular meetings or whenever required by the Executive, an account of the financial position of the Association. He / she shall submit audited financial records to the Corporate Registry annually and have charge of the official archives of the Association, to be made available as necessary throughout his / her term. The Secretary-Treasurer will perform such other duties as may from time to time be determined by the Executive. Upon expiry of his / her term of office, the Secretary-Treasurer shall give the Association all books, papers, vouchers, money and other property of whatever kind in his or her possession or under his or her control belonging to the Association.
If you are willing to stand for election to the position of Secretary-Treasurer, please send me an email or telephone call (780-423-7682). Though our bylaws direct that the Secretary-Treasurer manages the election, as Chair, I beg the indulgence of the membership to handle this process. Nominations will be accepted up to 4 pm on October 23, 2013. Candidates will be presented at our next meeting, October 24th, with an electronic mail ballot to follow.
