HeadStart 2018 on Hiatus

After 15 continuous years, the organizers of HeadStart have decided to suspend the program for 2018. Rest assured, we are still very committed to providing recent graduates with the fundamentals of legal research and all the tips and tricks we can offer. Look out 2019!

We will be using this time to evaluate the program; to find out what we do well, not so well, and everything in between. A very important part of this process will be getting feedback from you. We will reach out to you again in the fall.

Thank you for your continued support of the HeadStart program and we look forward to your participation next year.

ELLA’s first business meeting of the 2017-2019 term

In our initial meeting of the 2017-2018 fiscal year we will be collecting membership dues and discussing ELLA’s future.

The current members of our incoming ELLA Executive demonstrate the diversity within our membership. Our new Secretary-Treasurer, Shane Allan has recently graduated from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta. Our new Member-At-Large, Anke Eastwood has been a part of ELLA for a very long time and will allow us to keep our strong relationship with the Alberta Law Libraries.

At the Annual General Meeting held in June of this year, there were no volunteers to fill the position of ELLA Chair, which leaves the position open to interested parties.

While we recognize that many of our members have devoted their time to serve on the ELLA Executive at some point over the last 36 years, we encourage you to consider this great opportunity to reinvigorate your passion for law libraries, raise important discussions about this ever-evolving field, and be a part of the team to lead our Association that is 40 members strong today.

The University of Alberta Libraries, with a long tradition of service excellence to the University and its communities, seek a dynamic individual to join the team that provides services based from the Law Library and the Humanities and Social Sciences Library. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic professional librarian with a demonstrated interest in a career in law librarianship.  The successful candidate will provide liaison reference, research and instructional services to faculty and students in law as well as political science and sociology.  Strong knowledge of legal research, scholarly communication and digital information resources integral to success in this position.

The Rutherford Humanities & Social Sciences Library and the J.A. Weir Memorial Library are part of the larger University of Alberta Libraries system. Our mission is to collaborate in the advancement of teaching, learning and research.  We provide access to the past and present through our collections, services, spaces and expertise.  Our work empowers learners, scholars and researchers with local and global impact.


  • Masters in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent
  • Previous experience with teaching and instruction, new modes of service delivery, and electronic resources
  • Academic background or library experience in law and the humanities or social sciences
  • Formal training in Canadian Law and law librarianship through coursework and familiarity with databases such as CanLII, Westlawnext Canada, and LexisAdvance Quicklaw is strongly desired

Evening and weekend work will be required when the University is in session.

Applicants must also possess a strong service orientation, excellent instructional and communication skills, superior information management skills, and a commitment to cooperative and innovative solutions. Candidates will demonstrate evidence of ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment, and the ability to be flexible to changing circumstances. Candidates will possess a high level of competence with electronic information sources and new technologies, demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, organizational and analytical skills, leadership qualities, and evidence of ongoing professional development and involvement. Successful candidates will also be interested in and seek opportunities for conducting research and the evaluation of services and collections.

This is a tenure-track position at the Librarian 1 level with a current salary range of $62,231 to $124,387.
